NIGP 2020-2021 Grantees

Propel Nonprofits, with a state appropriation coming through the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development that was secured in partnership with the Coalition of Asian American Leaders, awarded $427,500 to 11 culturally led nonprofit organizations for infrastructure funding.

• Association for Black Economic Power: Implement agile work structure and culture, a data management system, internal checks and balances for incoming finances, and develop HR policies and procedures to increase workforce to meet programming demands.
• CAIR Minnesota: Hire three regional Minnesota outreach coordinators to address the needs of Muslim immigrants who have migrated to parts of Greater Minnesota and are facing the effects of Islamophobia in their communities. Expand relationships with existing partners and create new alliances with allies to build its network in Greater Minnesota.
• Hmong Museum: Develop sustainable infrastructure for financial systems and object cataloging, including a database, software, and technology; a consultant to create a fund development plan; and training for board and staff.
• Indigenous Roots: Support for leadership salaries.
• The JK Movement: Move from a mainly volunteer/independent contracting organization to paid staff positions to support organizational development and workforce development.
• Manidoo Ogitigaan: Hire a community development specialist and community project coordinator. Technical assistance with accounting systems.
• Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition: Grow organizational capacity by strengthening internal infrastructure.
• NAVIGATE MN/Unidos MN Education Fund: Exit current data system and contract a state-based cooperative data and system service that also provides technical support and training for staff. Hire a culturally competent consultant to help assess and build a plan for financial sustainability and management.
• Reviving the Islamic Sisterhood for Empowerment: Upgrade current operational and financial systems to support the growth of its platform. Hire a culturally competent staff for communication and development strategies for core mission support.
• Sahan Journal: Pursue a diverse revenue model, build capacity through contract staff for sales/membership, reporting, and photography and building a board of directors.
• Teatro del Pueblo: Build staff capacity, provide organization-wide training and tools for engagement, and build and train board of directors.

Minneapolis, Minn., December 2, 2019 – Propel Nonprofits, with a state appropriation coming through the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development that was secured in partnership with the Coalition of Asian American Leaders, has awarded $427,500 to 11 culturally led nonprofit organizations for infrastructure funding.

“As we saw in the first round of the Nonprofit Infrastructure Grant Program, direct investments in infrastructure for nonprofits led by and serving a range of cultural communities across Minnesota leads to measurable outcomes in our communities,” said Mario Hernandez, Strategic Services Director for Propel Nonprofits. “Propel strongly believes that investments in what we call core mission support are necessary for achieving mission success, and we feel honored to be able to administer this program.”

These infrastructure grants will be used for everything from implementing new financial and data management systems to building staff and board capacity. As in the first round of the Nonprofit Infrastructure Grant Program (2017-2019), there was once again strong demand from this kind of infrastructure support from nonprofits across Minnesota.

“These investments will support leadership and staff development, make these small but mighty organizations more efficient and effective, lead to more collaborations, and ultimately increase these amazing nonprofits’ ability to invest in their respective communities,” said Sarah Alfaham, Fiscal Sponsorship Manager at Propel Nonprofits.

In addition to grant funding, awarded organizations will also receive ongoing technical assistance from Propel Nonprofits regarding financial administration.
